“Set the Limits”

Dear friends, the mouth is a powerful tool and the tongue a little member capable of boasting many great things. A writer once alluded to the similarity between a tongue and fire, a tiny spark that can raze a mighty forest. The writer fuSet the Limitsrther stated that the tongue is a fire – that can contaminate, consume or deprave the entire body. (Read James 3:5, 6 AMP)

In the midst of life’s storms, a few things are immediately obvious:

  • The real intent of people is revealed
  • The only source of hope is also quickly deciphered.
  • Your true supporters (friends, family and partners) are revealed.
  • Additionally, what lies within you becomes evident as well – if there is unbelief or doubt or hesitation of any sort, these issues find their way to the top.
  • Perhaps, most important is what you say (at that moment) sets the limit of your circumstance(s).

Your words control you
Your words define you
Your words frame you
Your words empower or enslave you

Your words, confessions declarations are either open doors to great opportunities or caged prisons that paralyze, enslave and limit. It’s your call, your choice and your words.

In the book of Proverbs, we discovered that God defined the LIMITS of the SEA and marked out the BOUNDARIES of the EARTH.

“when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth” Proverbs 8:29 ESV

Similarly, the words of the Prophet Jeremiah in chapter 5:22 (ASV) echo the power of limits, “Fear ye not me? saith Jehovah: will ye not tremble at my presence, who have placed the sand for the bound of the sea, by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it? and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it.”

Like Father, Like Son

The Psalmist reminded us of the awesomeness of the Almighty God in Psalm 104:v 5-9 TLB”

5 You bound the world together so that it would never fall apart. 6 You clothed the earth with floods of waters covering up the mountains. 7-8 You spoke, and at the sound of your shout the water collected into its vast ocean beds, and mountains rose and valleys sank to the levels you decreed. 9 And then you set a boundary for the seas so that they would never again cover the earth.”

Can you recall how Jesus reacted when he heard about Lazarus’s death? Can you remember what I said earlier about how pressures/circumstances reveal what lies within the heart and soul? Now, notice the powerful words that came out of Jesus’ mouth, so refreshing too.

He said, “This sickness is not to end in death; but [on the contrary] it is to honor God and to promote His glory, that the Son of God may be glorified through (by) it.” (John 11:4 AMP)

What was the first thing he said? It is not unto death!
And the first thing he did? He set the limits.Notice the sequence –

  • He set the limit on the sickness and redefined the purpose of the sickness.
  • By so doing, He conquered a dead situation and turned it around for God’s glory.

When negative news of death, loss, defeat, failure, sorrow etc come your way, what do you say? What do you do?

Remember, your words EMPOWER OR ENSLAVE you.
With your words, you set the limits.

Set the Limits.

Our mouths are powerful, small but very powerful.
The writer of the book of James mentioned the tongue in chapter three and described it as such;

“Even so the tongue is a little member, and it can boast of great things. See how much wood or how great a forest a tiny spark can set ablaze! And the tongue is a fire. [The tongue is a] world of wickedness set among our members, contaminating and depraving the whole body and setting on fire the wheel of birth (the cycle of man’s nature), being itself ignited by hell (Gehenna).” – (James 3:5, 6 AMP)

Often the limitations we face are mostly self inflicted. Declared unbelief, negative confessions and much more.

When calamity arises, what’s on the inside will become evident. Here’s an example of the confident hope and assurance that Jesus had in God.

When Jesus heard the news of Lazarus’ death, his words revealed his faith and what was already inside him.

“When Jesus received the message, He said, This sickness is not to end in death; but [on the contrary] it is to honor God and to promote His glory, that the Son of God may be glorified through (by) it.”- (John 11:4 AMP)

First thing he said?
He set “the limits of the sickness”…
He redefined the purpose of the sickness…

When negative news come your way, what do you say? What do you do?

Start speaking life and setting limits.
Be like Jesus!
